Let’s change what dental care feels like.

Why Dental Anxiety Happens
Dental anxiety isn’t weakness. It’s a real, valid response—and understanding it is the first step toward overcoming it.
Common Triggers
Past Trauma: A painful or traumatic dental experience—especially in childhood—can create lasting fear. Your brain remembers, even if you’ve tried to “move on.”
Loss of Control: Lying back while someone works in your mouth can feel vulnerable. Not being able to speak or see what’s happening adds to the stress.
Fear of Pain: Modern dentistry is far gentler than decades past, but the reputation lingers. Many patients fear pain that simply won’t happen with today’s techniques.
Embarrassment: Worried about judgment? We hear this constantly. “My teeth aren’t perfect.” “I haven’t been in years.” “I’m too anxious.” We don’t judge. We help.
Sensory Overload: The sounds, smells, and sensations of a dental office can trigger anxiety. The drill noise, the smell of antiseptic, the feeling of instruments—your nervous system goes into overdrive.
The Avoidance Cycle
Here’s what happens: Anxiety leads to avoidance. Avoidance leads to worsening oral health. Worsening oral health leads to more complex treatment. More complex treatment feeds more anxiety.
Breaking this cycle starts with one gentle visit.
You’re Not “Too Anxious” to Be Helped
Some patients tell us, “I’m the worst dental patient you’ll ever have.”
Challenge accepted.
We’ve worked with patients who hadn’t been to a dentist in 20+ years. Patients who panicked in the waiting room. Patients who needed to pause mid-procedure multiple times.
Every single one of them got the care they needed—and many became regular, comfortable patients.
Your anxiety doesn’t disqualify you. It tells us how to care for you better.

Our Gentle Care Approach: What Makes Us Different
We don’t just say we’re gentle. We build our entire approach around anxious patients.
Before Your Visit
Complete Forms From Home: No clipboard stress in the waiting room. Fill out everything online at your own pace.
Email or Call—Your Choice: If calling makes you nervous, email us. We’ll handle everything via email if that’s what you prefer.
Pre-Visit Conversation: Want to talk through your fears before arriving? We’ll schedule a phone or video call—no charge, no pressure.
Bring Support: Family member, friend, even your therapy dog (if they’re certified). We welcome them.
When You Arrive
No Waiting Room Pressure: Arrive a few minutes early, or text us when you’re in the parking lot. We’ll come get you.
Private Entrance Option: If seeing other patients stresses you, we can arrange a private entrance through our side door.
Meet Your Team First: Before any treatment, you’ll meet your dentist and assistant. No surprises. No being handed off to strangers.
During Treatment
Explain Before We Touch: We tell you exactly what we’re going to do before we do it. No mystery, no shocks.
You Control the Pace: Raise your hand anytime—you want a break, you need water, you’re overwhelmed. We stop. Immediately.
Comfort Items Available: Noise-canceling headphones, weighted blankets, stress balls. Whatever helps you feel grounded.
Distraction Options: Watch Netflix on the ceiling TV. Listen to your playlist. We’ll keep you focused anywhere but the dental chair.
After Treatment
Check-In Calls: We’ll call the next day to see how you’re doing—not just clinically, but emotionally.
Positive Reinforcement: We celebrate wins with you. First visit in years? Huge milestone. We acknowledge it.
Flexible Scheduling: Need shorter appointments? More time between visits? We’ll work with your anxiety, not against it.
What Our Anxious Patients Say
“I hadn’t been to a dentist in 15 years. I was so embarrassed I almost cried in the waiting room. The team at Stone Creek made me feel like I was exactly where I belonged. No judgment. Just care.”
— Maria S., Monterey
“I’ve always panicked during dental work. For the first time ever, I actually relaxed. They stopped when I asked, explained everything, and didn’t rush me. I’m actually looking forward to my next visit.”
**— David R., Del Rey Oaks"
“If you’re anxious about the dentist, go here. They get it. They don’t treat you like you’re difficult. They treat you like a human.”
— Jennifer L., Seaside

Comfort & Sedation Options
Not every anxious patient needs sedation. But knowing it’s available can be incredibly reassuring.
Oral Sedation
What It Is: A prescription medication you take before your appointment to help you relax.
What It Feels Like: You’re awake and responsive, but deeply calm. Many patients describe it as feeling “dreamy” or “detached” from anxiety.
What It’s For: Moderate to severe anxiety, long procedures, or patients who want maximum relaxation.
Safety: We review your medical history, current medications, and any concerns before prescribing. You’ll need someone to drive you home.
Local Anesthesia (Numbing)
What It Is: Injection to numb the treatment area.
What It Feels Like: You’ll feel pressure but no pain. We use topical numbing gel first to make the injection itself virtually painless.
What It’s For: Any procedure that could cause discomfort—fillings, crowns, deep cleanings.
Note: If you’re nervous about needles, tell us. We have techniques to minimize the sensation.
Non-Medication Comfort Techniques
Many patients find these approaches just as powerful as sedation:
Tell-Show-Do: We show you the instrument, explain what it does, then use it. No surprises.
Desensitization Visits: Come in for a “practice visit” with no treatment. Sit in the chair, meet the team, get comfortable with the space.
Breathing Techniques: Simple guided breathing can calm your nervous system quickly. We’ll walk you through it.
Signal System: Agree on a hand signal (like raising your left hand) that means “stop immediately.” Knowing you have this control reduces anxiety significantly.
What We Don’t Do
We Don’t Rush: Ever. If you need 90 minutes for a 30-minute procedure, that’s fine.
We Don’t Minimize: “Don’t worry, it won’t hurt” isn’t helpful. We acknowledge your fear and work with it.
We Don’t Judge: Your teeth, your history, your anxiety—all welcome here.
Is Sedation Right for You?
During your consultation, we’ll discuss:
- Your anxiety level and triggers
- The procedure you need
- Your medical history
- Your comfort preferences
Some patients choose sedation for their first visit, then feel comfortable without it later. Others prefer it every time. Both are completely valid.
